In a world that's always on the move, there's a special place for those who embrace the simple joys of staying in. If you're a self-proclaimed homebody, you know the unique sense of contentment that comes from cocooning yourself in the comforts of your own space. But have you ever considered how apartment living can amplify these cozy moments? Here are a few reasons apartment living and being a homebody are the perfect match.

Let's not forget about the abundance of green space surrounding many Osgoode Properties apartments. Residents of Bayridge Court benefit from a quiet tree-lined street offering a peaceful lifestyle in Kingston’s west end. Similarly, Mountainview Apartments in Calgary bring a park-like feel to apartment living with walkable access to trails, parks, schools, and more. In a world where greenery is sometimes hard to come by, having these pockets of tranquility just outside your door can be a true blessing, particularly for those who prefer to stick close to home.

Valentine's Day is all about celebrating love – love for our partners, families, and friends! What better way celebrate than a night out on the town? From cozy bistros to romantic fine dining, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're looking for a quiet evening for two or a group outing with family or friends, you can find a restaurant that will make your Valentine's Day truly special.

At Osgoode Properties, we #lovelocal. Here are just a few of our favourite places around Ottawa.

Downtown Ottawa

Whether you are trying to make a great first date impression or celebrating a milestone in your relationship, Metropolitain Brasserie is sure to please. This cozy restaurant is warm and inviting and offers classic French cuisine with a modern twist. There is a full bar featuring local craft beers and wine, as well as signature cocktails. If you’re looking for a more laid-back evening, try The Albion Rooms. This restaurant is in a historic hotel that has been given a modern makeover. You have the option of a seated dining experience or small plates with drinks in their comfortable, chic lounge. Both restaurants are easily accessible for residents living in our downtown Ottawa apartment rentals.

Ottawa West

Looking for a restaurant that also offers a fun experience to share with your date? Supply and Demand offers pasta-making classes. A chef will guide you through the pasta-making process and once it’s complete, you can move to the restaurant side to enjoy your creation! Not in the mood for pasta? Down the road is Absinthe Café with a menu featuring classic French-Canadian dishes with a sophisticated twist. The restaurant’s charming atmosphere features an eclectic mix of vintage and modern décor – a unique setting for a romantic evening. And, as they say, “absinthe” makes the heart grow fonder! Located near our apartment rentals in Ottawa West, Wellington Village, both locations offer something special for a fun evening!

Ottawa East

You’ll want to dress up for this next spot! Delicious Steak + Wine is a sophisticated modern restaurant that is renowned for its amazing steak, fresh seafood, and extensive wine list. Though this spot specializes in – you guessed it – steak, vegan and vegetarian options are also available, making it a suitable spot for every palate. After dinner, enjoy a signature cocktail in their cozy lounge. Seeking something a little more intimate? Try Vespa Wine Bar. Sure to impress wine lovers, this restaurant specializes in pairing local and international wines with its infamous oven-fired pizzas. Both restaurants are a quick care ride for residents living in our Ottawa East apartment rentals.

Ottawa South

Want to take your Valentine away for the night? Cantina Gia will transport you to the (figurative) hillside of Tuscany, Italy. This boutique restaurant offers traditional Tuscan dishes with a modern twist. Northern Italy farm décor makes the quaint space warm and inviting. If you’re feeling inspired after a delicious Italian meal, there’s also a shop where you can purchase Italian spices, olive oils, pastries, and Italian wines. Another Italian cuisine option nearby is Vittoria Trattoria. This family-owned business creates classic Italian dishes straight from your Nonna’s recipe book. The dining room is open-concept seating with a beautiful glass-ceiling wine cellar as the focal point. Located near many of our Ottawa South apartment rentals, be sure to stop by this Valentine's Day!

At Osgoode Properties, we care about our community – it’s one of our core values.
For the past 14 years, Osgoode employees have participated in the Employee Giving Program, an initiative we created to provide our team members with the opportunity to give back to their communities by donating a portion of their pay. All proceeds will be evenly split among 4 charities, one charity for each of our main Osgoode Properties Communities. In 2021, we raised over $18,000 for local charities, surpassing our goal of $15,000.

This year our goal is to have 75% employee participation, working towards raising $20,000! The charities selected for 2022 donations are:

M-Ado Jeunes Logo

M-Ado Jeunes is a leading youth resource servicing the Gatineau region that supports the region’s adolescents through community involvement. Since its start, M-Ado Jeunes has provided support and guidance to over 6,000 young people in Gatineau.

Causeway Logo

Causeway is a not-for-profit agency that helps people with mental illness and other challenges find meaningful, rewarding work and live more independently. By helping everyone overcome their challenges and reach their full potential, Causeway helps establish stronger and more inclusive communities within Ottawa.

Compassion House Foundation Logo

Compassion House Foundation has a mission to support women fighting cancer. Located in Edmonton, the charity provides safe, comfortable, and affordable accommodations during their cancer journey. Additionally, they deliver much-needed programs and services post-treatment.

Dawn House Logo

Dawn House is a local Kingston charity supporting and empowering homeless, vulnerably housed, and marginalized women living in poverty with a vision for all women to be able to live in safe, affordable, and accessible housing.

We are dedicated to supporting the communities we work and live in.

With the participation of our employees, Osgoode Properties is on track to meet our $20,000 goal for 2022. If you are interested in donating or volunteering with any of these organizations, please follow the links to their websites.

We’re equally excited about our upcoming holiday food drive in December. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more information on how you can help support our holiday-giving initiatives!

Mother Nature has been hard at work creating her fall masterpiece with an array of yellows, reds and oranges beginning to surface in Ottawa’s landscape. While our Osgoode Properties residents are surrounded by fall’s beauty at their doorsteps, there is much more to explore around the city. These gorgeous colours are only here for a limited time– so grab your camera, your loved ones (human or furry), and don’t forget to put on your favourite fall sweater!

Here are a few of our favourite spots to capture your picture-perfect, Instagram-worthy fall photos!

Pine Grove Trail

There is no shortage of changing leaves at Pine Grove Trail with over 18km of trails, all easily accessible. Best of all, these trails are pet-friendly (like our properties!). For Osgoode Properties residents living in our Ottawa South neighbourhood, Pine Grove Trail is a quick car ride and offers three main parking areas. You’ll get a healthy dose of fresh air while you scout for your perfect backdrop.

Dominion Arboretum (Central Experimental Farm)

You really don’t have to leave the city to be immersed in nature! At the Dominion Arboretum you’ll find 86 acres of land with more than 2,000 varieties of trees and shrubs – all in close proximity to Osgoode Properties residents living in Downtown, Ottawa West and Ottawa South neighbourhoods. You can explore this beautiful area with one of the many winding paths. On the south-east side there is a lookout that offers a panoramic view of the historic Rideau Canal and the north-east side overlooks Dow’s Lake.

Log Cabin Orchard

Pumpkin patches and apple orchards are not only a fall staple, but they also make for a gorgeous backdrop mixed with the changing leaves! The Log Cabin Orchard is located 20min south of Ottawa and worth the drive. After you’ve snapped that perfect picture, you can pick up some apples and pumpkins too, open Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm and Sat-Sun 9am to 6pm.

Gatineau Park

It’s no surprise this spot has made its way onto this list, with its close proximity to Osgoode Properties residents living in our Ottawa and Gatineau neighbourhoods. Gatineau Park is the largest green space in the National Capital Region and the second-most visited park in Canada. There are various points of interest and historical places throughout to discover. There are also several hiking paths varying from easy to difficult – so you can also get your workout in while you take in the scenic fall landscapes.

Carbide Willson Ruins

This last spot is also on the Quebec side and requires a little more dedication to reach it. But if you are looking to get unique and beautiful fall photos – it’s worth the trek! Located next to Meech Lake you’ll find the Carbide Willson Ruins, an old fertilizer plant with a unique history, hidden within the forest. The trail to reach the area is approximately 3.25km (round trip). You'll be sure to snap some stunning photos that will make your followers envious.

Fall is harvest season. Crops are ready to be picked!

Leaf lettuce, spinach, mustard, arugula, cress, sorrel, and kale make good fall crops, as do pumpkins, squash, beets, carrots, radishes, and turnips. The best place to access good fall harvest crops? We’re big fans of local markets – and you’ll be sure to have a gourd time!

Farmers markets are a lot of fun. There’s no rush. People are there to discover great food and connect with the farmers and artists. Public markets give local residents access to delicious fresh, locally grown food, and local artisans a space to share their craft. Overall, they bring vibrancy and health to the entire community. They often become the centre of a neighbourhood, instilling pride in the community.

Take advantage of the fall harvest and check out some of the local markets in Osgoode Properties neighbourhoods.

Ottawa

There’s no shortage of markets in Ottawa. Farmers’ Markets Ontario alone lists eight venues, from the downtown ByWard Market and the Lansdowne Park Market to the more seasonal markets. The Westboro Market is a quick 6 minutes away for anyone in our Ottawa West neighbourhoods and the Beechwood Market has our Ottawa East neighbourhoods covered – you can hop over in about 5 minutes. While the market in Westboro will stay open until the end of October to bring you the bountiful harvests from local producers as well as a variety of products from artisans, Beechwood has the option to shop local all year long by offering hundreds of products online. For Ottawa South, the Alta Vista Market popped up in 2022 and similar to Beechwood Market – they both have an onsite market as well as an online market.

Gatineau

Just across the river from Ottawa and less than 10 mins from Le Faubourg De L'ile, Marché Vieux Hull in Parc Moussette will be open with fall harvest through October. To find a full list of produce and other food producers, check out their website.

Kingston

Kingston’s Memorial Centre Farmers Market is the place to be for this Fall’s harvest. It’s 100% producer-run and they’re all about getting you eating and enjoying agricultural and ready-to-eat products! They pride themselves on all food being grown and produced in the Kingston foodshed. This market is about 10 minutes from Bayridge Court and Westview Place and worth jumping in the car for the quick drive.

Edmonton

Less than a 5-minute drive from our Baywood Park location, the 124 Grand Market has been thriving since 2012. A fixture at 124 Street, the Edmonton Public Market serves the community with quality, locally farmed products and supports growing business. It’s worth checking out their selection of Fall produce, but the live music, performances, food trucks, local growers, bakers, makers make it a great place to spend a fall weekend. Check out their Facebook page for more information.

Calgary

Only an 8-minute drive from our Mountainview Apartments, the Crossroads Market has been around for more than 30 years. With over 150 vendors, there’s something for everyone. Not only will you find what you expect from a fall harvest, but you can find meat, breads and cheeses, pies, soups, and sausages – delicious! Get all the details on their website.

3. Embrace Your Inner Yogi

Practicing yoga inside is one thing, but outside elevates the experience unlike anything else. Ottawa is lucky to have many yoga classes and activities available for every level of experience, with a variety of events and classes happening outdoors in the summer. One of which is Lansdowne Park’s full moon yoga, which happens once a month under a full moon. With the next session coming up on August 11th at 9:00 pm, this free event is one hour long and is located on Lansdowne’s Great Lawn. Another yoga event happening consistently throughout the summer is Pure Yoga’s weekly class by instructor Brittany Bryden. This costs $21 per class and is located in the dreamiest hidden courtyard garden of the National Gallery of Canada!

Experiencing the car-free roads is a fantastic way to enjoy some of our National Capital’s most beautiful summer views in a fun, environmentally-friendly way. Locations participating in the 2022 Weekend Bike Days include the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway, the Queen Elizabeth Driveway, the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, and Gatineau Park.
